The Support You Didn't Know CapU Had

With summer vacation ending, you might be wondering whether your first year as a university student will provide the support you need as part of our community. If you're a North Shore resident, you don't have to worry, since we make sure you feel like you belong and can thrive.

Plan your academic path

Like any university, our priority is your academic success, with Academic Advising available across all our programs. Advisors can help with program planning, choosing your major, minor, and concentration, or your pathway. Appointments are available in person on campus or remotely by phone, Microsoft Teams or Zoom. If you're concerned about your course load, they can help you figure out what study-life balance works for you. They also host workshops every fall and spring semester for those who need help with course registration options.

Learning Support is here to help you academically succeed, whether it's practical advice, workshops, or individual assistance, be it studying or writing. If English isn't your first language, our Language Support is a great resource to improve your proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. And even if you are fluent, our Writing Centre provides techniques and peer support to improve your writing, or you can drop in to the Math Learning Centre for help with mathematics and statistics. If you need help researching, our Library can give you access to a wide collection of eBooks, articles, journals and databases, with our librarians around for any other support you might need. Finally, our Student Digital Ambassadors can help you navigate our online platforms and educational technology tools.

Access accommodations and funding guidance

And even if you're facing chronic or sensory disabilities, or identify as neurodivergent, whether it's temporary, ongoing, episodic, or non-evident, making sure you have what you need for success is no less important. After registering with Accessibility Services, you can book an appointment with one of their advisors to figure out what you need physically, attitudinally, technologically, systemically, or communicationally for your studies. Your term instructors will then be briefed on your accommodation. If you have a documented permanent disability, we also have guidance on qualifying for federal and provincial grants.

Build your career

With how important undergraduate work experience is, Career Services offers advising, coaching, workshops and events to help you feel empowered in your professional development. Working with faculty and community partners, they'll help improve your hireability and open doors to new experiential learning opportunities. Part of that includes the Career Development Centre, which can help you with job searching, finding volunteer experience, or providing financial advising.

Look after your wellbeing

Because your wellbeing matters, Health Services includes enrolment in our Health & Dental Plan, saving you out-of-pocket costs for on-campus walk-in health and dental care. And with the importance of physical activity, you can freely use our wheelchair-accessible Centre for Sport and Wellness, which hosts fitness classes and intramurals, with access to the weight room, changing rooms, and rentable lockers. And if you're also a parent of young children, you have priority for affordable on-campus childcare space, courtesy of the Children's Centre and Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies.

Connect through Indigenous Services

And just as we're named after Chief Joe Capilano to honour being on the Squamish Nation's land, supporting our First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students personally and academically through Indigenous Services is part of who we are. This includes Learning Support, Tutoring & Resources, which hosts academic preparation workshops and free drop-in sessions for math, writing, and research. Another resource is our Elder-in-Residence program, which offers support through interactive workshops, one-on-one mentoring, or in-class presentations. And finally, our Kéxwusm-áyakn Student Centre is a great place to make connections, share stories, or finish assignments.
